Located on the banks of the Lagan River, Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, with a population of over 330,000. At the beginning of the 19th century, Belfast was a major port and key player in the Industrial Revolution due to its production of linen. Although the city suffered intense political violence towards the end of the 20th century, it currently has a fast-growing economy and remains an important centre for industry, trade, business, law and higher education. Some of the largest corporations with headquarters in the city include Allstate Northern Ireland, Harland and Wolff, Kainos Group, Short Brothers, Wireless Group Limited and Woodgate Aviation. In the recent, more peaceful decades, Belfast became a major tourist destination, attracting annually over 7 million visitors. Some of its most famous landmarks include the imposing Belfast City Hall, constructed in 1906 in an Edwardian style, the Cathedral Quarter, the city’s main cultural and touristic area, as well as the city’s over 40 public parks and gardens.
