Bangkok is the capital and the most populated city of Thailand. Extending over 1,500 square kilometers and having more than 10 million inhabitants and an exponentially increasing number of tourists, Bangkok can be considered one of the major metropolises in the world. It began as a small trading post of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century and later on developed into two capital cities, Thonbury (1768) and Rattanakosin (1782). During the late 19th century, Bangkok became the center of the modernization of Siam, which was soon after renamed Thailand. Nowadays, following the investment boom from the 1980s and 1990s, Bangkok is a major center in finance, business, transport, and healthcare, with many multinational corporations having their regional headquarters there. It is also an important center for arts, entertainment, and fashion. Combining historical landmarks such as the Grand Palace or Buddhist temples such as Wat Pho and Wat Arun with the vibrant street-life on Khaosan Road and Patpong (including its notorious Red Light Districts), Bangkok is among the world’s major tourist destinations.
