Doha is the capital and most populated city of Qatar. Located on the Persian Gulf’s coast, it has a population of almost 1.5 million and is a fast growing city officially recognized as one of the ‘New Seven Wonders Cities,’ together with Beirut, Durban, La Paz, Vigan, Kuala Lumpur, and Havana. It is the economic, commercial, and financial center of Qatar and the 10th most expensive city to live in the world. By the 20th century, Doha became famous for its flourishing pearl trade. Nowadays, its economy and revenue are primary built from its oil and gas industries, the city being the headquarters of various national and international organizations, such as Qatar’s largest oil and gas companies, Qatargas and RasGas. In terms of architecture, Doha is largely characterized by modern buildings, including more than 50 skyscrapers. Since most of the city’s districts with traditional architecture were demolished in order to make room for new constructions, various measures have been taken in order to preserve Doha’s architectural and cultural tradition and heritage, such as the Qatar Museums Authority’s Al Turath al Hai (‘living heritage’). Additionally, sheikh Tamim Al Thani founded a small village within the city of Doha, the Katara Cultural Village, aiming to preserve the country’s cultural identity.
